Jaw Breaker

Day 1 (Dec. 14): Ouch.
21 stitches, two broken teeth, and a one messed up jaw bone (broken and dislocated)

After getting my wisdom teeth out yesterday, with no complications, I took my pain killers to help me sleep. Little did I know it would literally knock me out (almost immediately). While walking from the kitchen to the bedroom I passed out and hit the floor (note to self: hard floor packs a hard punch).

Brian called 911 and the neighborhood firetruck, lucky number 13, arrived at the house. You can find humor in almost anything and our friendly doomsday paramedic is someone we still laugh about.

Here are two tips for those who want to be paramedics or firemen:
1) Comments like: "you could of broken your neck and died" are not helpful.
2) Worried husbands have a hard time remembering when the last time the real Christmas tree was watered when wife is bleeding. Stay focused on the task at hand.

Anyway, thanks firetruck 13 for the medical help, for watering our Christmas tree, and the 9 free batteries for our fire alarms should our Christmas tree spontaneously go up in flames.

This night I am thankful for friends like the Ericksons. Doug came over in the middle of the night to watch the kids while Brian and I were at the ER. Calm and collected, you helped us so much.

I am also thankful that the kiddos are deep sleepers. They slept through the fall, the paramedics, and all the excitement- Thank God!

Day 2 (Dec. 15): Put on a Brave Face
A promise is a promise. I told Chloe I would be at school to see her sing her 12 Days of Christmas. A lot of make-up, Motrin and a stylish Hello Kitty band aid and I am ready to face a class of kindergartners. Brian was there to help me along the way (he is a true super husband). I found out that listening to children singing does my soul good.

Day 7 (Dec. 20): Making Progress to Normal
I got my two front teeth fixed on Friday and stitches out today. It is amazing how the body heals. Kyle can now look at me...before the blue stitches freaked him out. Chloe, lovingly, called me Frankenstein when I had stitches-- too bad it is the Christmas season and not Halloween.

Day 9 (Dec. 21): Super Ouch- Wired Shut
Yesterday, I went in for surgery. I have a mouth full of wires and a huge welt and bruise on my left cheek. I wonder, did Doc Martin punch me in the process? Just kidding, I know it is from him realigning the jaw, but it feels like a punch.

Day 10 (Dec. 22): Nancy the Super Aunt
Nancy arrived on the 21st and took over kid duty on Wednesday and Thursday. She kept things light and close to normal by keeping the kids busy with movies, wrapping gifts and doing art work. She should receive a prize for suffering through Chipmunks III- even the kids thought it wasn't the best.

Day 12 (Dec. 25) Christmas and Pancake Shakes
In true Andrews family style, we made the best of it.

Grandmaman Andrews stayed with us for a few days and spent Christmas Eve with us. She was great helping out with the kids and celebrating the Christmas season.

On Christmas Day, the kids woke up early and Santa arrived with treats for all of us. Angry Birds ruled the roost- stuffed toys, t-shirts, card games, oh my.

I discovered my new favorite kitchen utensil- the Ninja blender (yes, it does works just as good as the infomercial promises). I broke it in with an ice cream pancake shake (vanilla ice cream, apple-maple jelly, and one pancake) - yum. This would be the first of many new soup and shake concoctions. My daily menu now includes: liquid Motrin, protein drinks, homemade juices from my friend Julie, Campbells cream soups, applesauce diluted with juice, and cream of wheat diluted with milk. Goodbye bread, candy, and meat--I miss you.

Day 20 (Jan. 2): Goodbye Motrin
The headaches and soreness are finally getting better and I am able to get through the day without mega doses of Motrin ( I still refuse to take Vicidin). Seems like a little thing, but it is a big step to be able to wake-up without my head pounding.

Day 35 (Jan. 19): Wires Are Off
I am simply elated to have the wires off! It is pure joy! The arch bars are still there but now all I have to contend with is a little rubber band. Toast and Pei Wei fried rice were my first menu items of the day. I am still eating soft foods but at least it is not just liquids.

I'm working on getting the jaw to open with stretching exercises. It is about as close as I get to working out on a regular basis ;)

Day 38 (Jan. 20): Thank You Friends and Family
Everyone showered my family with kindness and support. Today, Kyle's class made me a get well card that warms the heart and reminds me to thank our many loved ones. A shout out goes to:

Brian- Thank you for being a super dad and supportive hubby. You are my rock.

Kyle and Chloe- Thanks for the prayers and asking me everyday if I felt better.

Nancy, Mom and Gaetane- Thank you for all of your help. From shopping, to reading with the kids, to doing laundry--you were there to keep us going.

Andrews, Ericksons, Schotts, Austins, and McMullens- Thanks for the many play dates and distractions while I recovered or had doc appointments.

My ASU colleagues and friends- Thanks for all of your kind letters, emails and support. A special shout out to Gini, Cindi and Sandi for carrying the load while I was away from work. Julie I loved the juices and feel energized every time I drink them!

It was a great soccer season. Chloe joined her first soccer team, the Mighty Mermaids. She had a ton of fun and a very mighty kick. Kyle was a star on his team the Knights. This year he really understood the game. He scored the winning goals (and the only goals) of the last two games.

Kyle had a fun-filled birthday with both grandmas and his buddies from school and soccer. We kicked it off early with Grandmaman Andrews at our house. It was happy hot dogs for dinner that night. Then off to Tucson for Thanksgiving and Kyle's actual birthday (Nov. 26). We opened presents in the morning, visited the Children's Museum, then saw lights, then wrapped up the evening with s'mores at the El Conquistador pool (they had a fire pit). The party never stops...it kept going to the next weekend where Kyle took a few buds from school and soccer to the Sun Devil Game. Sparky's team lost but the gang had fun.

Kyle started first grade at Saint Theresa's Catholic School. He has loved every day and made many new friends. He was on the honor roll and earned a citizenship award his first semester. He loves playing soccer on the play ground with friends, buying hot lunch when it is "breakfast for lunch" days, and has one of the most caring teachers in the world.

Labor Day 2010

So Labor Day in Tucson was full of surprises. We kicked off the weekend down in Tucson and were so happy to find out that Chloe was finally tall enough for the water slide. But things went down hill from there. Our beloved Lily got bit by a rattle snake. She recovered fine but had weeks of swelling and has two permanent scars on her muzzle.

One Girl, Four Celebrations. Chloe had a series of celebrations for the big 4. It started early with a special visit from her Aunt Nancy. Spending days at the posh pool at the Montelucia Resort and getting her toe nails done with the girls was just right for this little princess.

July 30: School Celebration: What would a school celebration be without purple piggy cupcakes?

July 31: It was an incredible day. We had great weather so spent the day outside at the train park and the zoo! We ended the day with a tea party of course. Served on the special tea set that her great aunt Adelaide gave her.

Party Animal

Kyle hosted his first big birthday party at the house. It actually was the biggest party we have ever had...besides our wedding. Friends, family and team mates joined us for bouncing and super sliding. By the end of the day everyone was pretty wiped out and went home with goodie bags and blue smiles (thanks to frosting on the birthday cake).

In our house, it is a tradition to list our favorite parts of our trips. Carlsbad tops the list for our all time favorite vacations and here are a few highlights...

Favorite Stop Along the Way: Lake Elsinore Storm Single A Baseball Game. A beautiful park, nice restaurant with a patio view from the corner of left field, a couple of big slides for the kids, and yummy caramel apples.

Favorite Surprise: No lines at Legoland. We went on Monday and Thursday and the crowds were small. At times, Kyle and Brian were able ride a roller coaster once, then tell the staff they wanted to ride again and off they went. Chloe loved any ride as long as she was with her mom. For parents of small kids not in school, traveling the week of after Labor Day is the way to go.

Favorite Place to have a Picnic: The fountain at Balboa Park was the perfect place for a picnic. We also checked out the Science Center, Train Museum, and Botanical Gardens.

Favorite Beach: The beach by our hotel had lots of waves, great sunsets, and tons of sand to play in. The water was warm and the kids loved spinning around as the tide came in.

Favorite Bedtime Story: Launching out into the breeze, we sail above the darkened trees, flying fast, to wet our feet where land and foamy ocean meet...

"Bats at the Beach" came alive Wednesday night when we read the book under the stars and surrounded by sand and surf.

Favorite Work: The only "construction projects" and "space planning" going on were sandcastles and finding comfy spots on the couch. No e-mail or phone calls on this family vacation.

Day at the Iowa State Fair

The single largest event in Iowa and one of the oldest and largest agricultural expos in the country, we were just a few of the over one million people who attended.

The fair serves up 30 types of food on a stick: pork chops, dill pickles, corn dogs, cheese, Cajun chicken, caramel apples, chili dog, beef, cotton candy, veggie corn dogs, turkey drumsticks, nutty bars, chocolate cheesecake, hot bologna, chocolate covered bananas, taffy, fried pickles, honey, wonder bars, deep fried Twinkies, meatballs, Ho-Hos and fudge puppies (waffles drenched in chocolate sauce).

The Road to Des Moines

What would a road trip through Iowa be without traveling on a few back roads and taking some side trips. Brian mapped out a few surprises for the family so we could see some sights that are out of the ordinary.

The Danish Windmill in Elk Horn

Elk Horn's Danish windmill was built in 1848 in Norre Snede, Denmark and used to grind grain into flour for farmers in neighboring communities. Since Elk Horn has one of the largest concentrations of Danes in the United States the mill was shipped and rebuilt to celebrate the country's bicentennial.

They also have a vineyard near buy. We bought the "table wine" but haven't tried it yet . Since the table wine is their only offering it doesn't seem Napa has anything to worry about.

The Tree in the Middle of the Road

Oops...watch where you put this stick. A surveyor was marking the line between Audubon and Cass counties used a cottonwood branch as he walked. When he was done, he pushed it in the ground where the lines crossed and where the roads cross today. The switch took root and it has grown into today’s tall and widespread 100 foot tree.

The Smiley Face Water Tower

Adair was created in the summer of 1872 and is th site of the first train robbery of a moving train. On July 21, 1873, Jesse James and his band of outlaws stole $3,000 in gold before they fled to Missouri. Now it's point of pride is the Smiley Face Water Tower. Who needs a company logo when you have this beaming face cheering you on as you pass it on the highway?

Pretty impressive for a state capital building. It's dome is 24 karat. Not bad for Iowa.

July 23- 27, 2008

We had a great visit with Grandmanan and got to see many new things.

The trip started out a little rocky. Guess who can scare away a flight attendant faster than any two year old I have ever met? Yep, you guessed it. Miss Chlo didn't earn any wings on this trip. At least the fellow passengers had a sense of humor...I heard a collective chuckle when she reached the top of her two year old tantrum by screaming a definitive no and then slamming the window shade. All that carrying on takes a bit of energy and she tired herself out and slept like an angel after the commotion.

The rest of the trip was a great adventure and celebration. We had a yummy dinner at Grandmaman's house and even celebrated Gaetane's and Chloe's birthday with cake and trick candles.

The next day we hit the road for Monterey to see the aquarium. The jellyfish and penguins were a real hit with the kids. The town was quaint, the hotel was charming, and the views of the ocean and boats were spectacular.

We stopped in Santa Cruz at the boardwalk before heading to Felton. We warmed up for our big Thomas the Tank Engine ride by taking a small train ride at the boardwalk. Chloe got a quick ride on the carousel and then it was time to hit the road again.

We met Thomas in Felton. He didn't exactly live up to Kyle's expectations (he was more of an over-decorated caboose vs. a real engine) but the winding route through huge trees and over a rolling river was a great retreat.

A little quality time in Millbrae and Grandmanan's house topped off the trip. Kyle and Chloe got to hang with Grandmaman while Mom and Dad headed up to the city on the train for a Giants game...this was a real treat for all.

Our Little Wild Child Is Turning Two

Chloe turns two at the end of the month and we are going to celebrate with a birthday breakfast at the Phoenix Zoo. It has been such a joy to watch her learn and grow. She loves life, has a mind of her own, and has even been known to play a prank or two. We can't wait to see what the future holds for this little miss independent.

A Great Break for 4th of July

Jill turned off the blackberry early Friday morning and we were officially on family time.

To kick off the holiday, we got up early and lined the neighbors driveways with tiny little flags. Then by 8 a.m. it was Arcadia Parade time. We watched for a bit and then hopped in the parade with Kyle's bike and Chloe's stroller decked out in red, white and blue garland. Cousins Cole and Cade were along for the ride in the Radio Flyer.

If there was a contest for best candy tossing, Kyle would have won. As he was riding his bike in the parade, he would spot a kid near by and step on the breaks. His dad would come running with a bucket of suckers when he heard Kyle's commanding "CANDY!". Kyle would carefully count and then toss just enough suckers to the kids. The Phoenix Fire department was on hand cooling of the kids and showing them the proper methods of spraying the fire hose and Chloe got her two minutes of fame dancing in front of the Channel 3 cameras.

By 4 p.m. it was time to head to a pool party where Chloe once again showed she is a dare devil. The five year olds were loving the pool's slide and Chloe was not to be left out. She would jet down the slide-- confident that her mom would pick her up out of the water. All I can say is thank god we don't have a pool :)

Although we had a long day, we still got fireworks in on the way home.

Saturday we vegged out and rented movies.

Sunday we had breakfast with Robb and Deanna and then off to McCormick Train Park that evening for more fireworks, concert and play time with Cole and Cade.

Watch out Lance Armstrong, Here Comes Kyle

Kyle made the big step from a tricycle to a big boy bike. He rides with his dad on a daily basis to get the hang of it. He hasn't totally figured out how to break-- which is a little bit of a problem and causes a few tumbles now and then. Good thing we keep the helmet on at all times.

Chloe thinks she should be next. She likes to do everything her big brother does and can't figure out why she can't climb on too. I think she has already picked out her big girl bike at the store...she wants one with butterflys of course. For now, she is going to have to learn the ropes on her new little tricycle.
